Geography

'For God so loved the world, he gave His one and only son.'

John 3:16

Mission Statement

Our mission is to work to develop the full potential of each individual in an environment where the Gospel values of love, peace, truth and justice are lived out.

Introduction

At St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School, we want every child to be inspired, curious and fascinated about the world and its people. We want them to be enthusiastic and excited learners of Geography.  We want our children to acquire a knowledge of the world, illuminated by faith!

Intent

Our main aim at St Mary’s Catholic School is for children to leave us with a wide range of wonderful and rich memories in geography formed through stimulating, varied and thought-provoking experiences. St Mary’s pupils will develop the geographical skills needed to collect and analyse information, gather first hand experiences of the environment and be confident using their independent skills to carry out geographical enquiries. Children will be enabled to interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and communicate geographical information in a variety of ways.

Implementation

Geography at St Mary’s is planned and taught so that children can achieve depth in their learning. Carefully planned topics of learning in geography ensure consistency and progression for all learners. At the beginning of each topic, children are able to convey what they know already as well as what they would like to find out. This informs the programme of study and also ensures that lessons are relevant and take account of children’s different starting points.

Impact

As children progress throughout the school, they develop a deep knowledge, understanding and an appreciation of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context.  They are given the opportunity to re-visit and revise prior learning, so that the key knowledge that we have identified, is retained.

Cultural Capital

At St Mary’s we wish all children to leave our school and go on to succeed in life, whatever path they are to take. All children are on their own individual journey but should be confident in their knowledge of the world and its opportunities.

British Values

God, His earth and His people are at the centre of all teaching at St Mary’s school. Through different topics in our Geography curriculum, children learn how people and places have changed over time. As children travel through their Geography journey, the children become more aware of local and wider differences in the world
