Welcome to Reception Class

Welcome to Reception Class.  Thank you for choosing St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School for your child.  We are excited to meet you all.  We look forward to working with you over the coming year.

In the EYFS setting, we believe that all children are entitled to the best possible start in their school life, both intellectually and emotionally, in order to enable them to develop their full potential.

We recognise that young children learn best when they are active. We understand that active learning involves other people, objects, ideas and events that engage and involve children for sustained periods. Therefore, we believe that Early Years education should be as practical as possible and our EYFS setting has an ethos of learning through play.

We are following the new EYFS curriculum for 2021.  Our curriculum is divided into half-termly topics.  Careful consideration has been given to which themes, stories and experiences enthuse our children and produce the most powerful learning; while remaining flexible enough to respond to children’s interests. The topics we introduce are starting points for the children’s play and learning and we are keen to develop topics following the children’s interests and ideas. The topics that we cover are very flexible and interest driven by the children we have in the setting. There are lots of topic linked learning opportunities available during their Child Initiated time, but the children are also able to access other resources if their interests and learning take them in other directions.

Our topics are:
What is your Superpower?
Shall we bake a cake?
Who is part of the Animal Kingdom?
Where in the world is?
Can you grow a tree in the sea?
How do you get to Grandma’s house?

Uniform and P.E Kit
Please make sure that everything (including pumps, shoes, coats, bags and ties) are clearly labelled with your child’s name and check this on a regular basis.  We have P.E. on a Tuesday afternoon.  Children should have their P.E. kit in school at all times.

Home/School Books
Every child brings home a Home/School Book.  We put a newsletter on Tapestry every week and would encourage you and your child to tell us what they have been doing when at home. We use these as a forum to develop speech and communication.  We feel it is a very important part of building friendships, taking turns and helps to build their vocabulary.

Library and Reading Books
Before children begin to read we send home library books every week for them to share with you.  As their reading progresses, we begin to send home reading books.  Your child will also have access to the Oxford Owl EBook package where books are assigned for your child to read each week.  At this point, the children are reading almost every day in school.

We of course share a variety of books with the children over the course of the year and would encourage you to do the same to develop their love of reading.  Please ensure that books are in their bags every day in order for staff to facilitate changing them.

Children in Reception class do not need to bring a snack to school.  Fruit, milk and water is readily available throughout the day. We also have ‘Super Snack Day’ once a week for which we ask for a small contribution.  This then gives the children the opportunity to experience a variety of different food during the course of their time in Reception class.

Please follow our school Twitter feed, to share in the wonderful work going on in school @StMarysDuk

Tapestry is our online forum where we upload observations, send messages and set online learning.  You can access your child’s individual learning journey and even upload your own photographs and messages.  Please ensure you follow the link that is emailed you in order to register.

Thank you for your continued support,

The Reception Team
