Year 4
Welcome to Year 4
Welcome to Year 4! This page is an overview of what to expect from Year 4 over the coming year.
Topic
Year 4 will be learning about the following topics over the year:
- Romans we will be researching the question ‘Who were the Romans and what did we learn from them?’
- Mountains
- Ancient Egypt
- Mapping Unit
- European Study
Reading & Reading Books
Your child will receive a reading book each Monday to share with you at home; these need to be returned each Monday to be changed. The children are also encouraged to read a range of material in addition to any of the books taken from school including their own books, comics or children’s newspapers etc to ensure they are reading a wide range of different text types to not only develop reading skills but reading for enjoyment. It is vital that the children develop a true love of reading as they progress in Year 4 from learning to read to reading to learn.
In Key Stage 2, the children keep a record of the books that they read and need to comment in their own reading log. Please feel free to add any comments as parents.
Children can also access a range of texts using Oxford Owl https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ and audio books on Epic https://www.getepic.com/
Independent Learning
By the end of Year 4, children are expected to know all their times tables up to 12 x 12. The children are encouraged to practice learning the times tables (and their corresponding division facts) regularly and to help them they have their own log ins to TTRockstars https://ttrockstars.com/ which is an online platform.
Spellings will be set weekly and can be practiced using the online platform Spelling Shed. https://www.spellingshed.com/en-gb/
Uniform & PE Kit
Please make sure your child’s name is written into all items of PE kit, uniform and coats. This makes identification of lost items a lot easier. PE lessons are every Monday and Wednesday afternoon. During lessons, earrings are not permitted to be worn and long hair must be tied back.
As always, we encourage the children to come to school looking smart, with shirts tucked in, top buttons fastened and black sensible shoes. Trainers and boots are not allowed. Nails should be clean and free of nail varnish.
Snacks & Packed Lunches
As a healthy school, we encourage the children to eat a wide range of healthy snacks and lunches. We would prefer fruit or vegetables only for playtime snacks and water for drinks during the day.
Please follow our school Twitter feed, to share in the wonderful work going on in school @StMarysDuk
ClassDojo
We use ClassDojo to set online learning, share examples of good work and share whole school messages. Please ensure that you are linked in to our class page.
To further enhance the children’s learning experience, if you have any photographs or video clips of any interesting or exciting activities completed at home or anywhere outside of school that you would like to share with us, please upload them on to Class Dojo.
We are really looking forward to working with you and your child over the coming year. With your help and support, each child will be able to fully access their learning in order to achieve their full potential.
Thank you for your continuing support
